From a Traditional Cauldron to Warm Conversations.
The Root — Gamabylee (Since 2020)
Our journey began in 2020 at the Halifax Brewery Farmers’ Market.
At the time, it was difficult to find authentic Asian comfort food in the city. We started small, with a simple mission: to share the warmth of Korean home cooking through handmade mandu.
The name Gama (가마) refers to a traditional Korean cauldron — the heart of the kitchen, where food is slow-cooked with care and shared generously. That spirit shaped everything we did. What began as a mandu stall gradually grew into Gamabylee, a market brand known for comforting yet thoughtfully crafted favorites like Tonkatsu Sando and Bento boxes, served every Saturday.
Even today, that original intention remains at the center of our work.
The Space — Suda Table (Since 2022)
In February 2022, we opened Suda Table.
Truthfully, it began from something personal — I couldn’t find the specific desserts I loved in Halifax. So I decided to make them, and share them.
In Korean, Suda (수다) means friendly conversation — the kind that flows easily when you’re seated around a table with something good to eat. That’s the feeling we hoped to create: a warm, inviting space where people could slow down, gather, and talk freely over coffee and cake.
We are deeply committed to the quality of what we serve. Our specialty beans rotate regularly, sourced from roasteries we trust. Every morning, we taste and dial in our espresso with care, making small adjustments to ensure each cup is balanced and intentional.
The Craft — Daily Dedication & Seasonality
Our days begin at 4 AM.
That’s when the ovens turn on and the first trays go in. Every pastry is baked fresh in-house, in small batches. It’s early, and it’s not always easy — but it’s how we maintain the quality we believe in.
Seasonality guides our menu. Ingredients change, flavours shift, and our sandwiches and savory offerings rotate throughout the year. While much evolves with the seasons, a few items have quietly become staples — like our Egg Sandwich, a simple favourite we’re proud to serve daily.
A Note for Mandu Lovers 🥟
For those who have followed us since the beginning, we have a small update. While our handmade Mandu used to be available year-round, we’ve decided to make them a special seasonal treat to ensure the highest quality during the months you crave them most. Our Mandu will now be available during the cold season, from October to May.
It’s Me!
Lee and I moved from Seoul to Halifax in 2017 — straight into a place that felt, at the time, like a bit of a cultural desert (we say that with love).
Before coffee and 4 AM baking shifts, I worked as a designer. Maybe that’s why Suda Table is filled with design books and small details that most people don’t notice. Design never really left me — it just changed form.
I love to travel and wander through new cities, discovering cafés and bakeries along the way. These days, though, running a café makes spontaneous trips… slightly unrealistic.
So for now, I travel through flavours.
And somehow, Halifax became home.
